Increased confidence and stronger financial skills – those were the things Medha came away with after her time on our WE Can India project. Find out more about how she boosted her textiles company Weaver Bird, as a result in this short video.
Developed in close collaboration with and funded by U.S. Embassy India and delivered in partnership with Dhriiti, the WE Can: Workshop and Business Plan Competition for Women Entrepreneurs initiative supported young women entrepreneurs across five cities in North India: Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Jaipur and Lucknow.
Through five days of intensive business training, followed by six weeks of mentoring, we empowered 125 aspirational women entrepreneurs to build the confidence and capability they needed to manage and grow sustainable businesses. Twenty six women received further development support to kick start their businesses including one-on-one coaching, advanced business training, and access to networks, markets and financial services. Five enterprises with high growth potential were also chosen through a business pitch competition to receive a start-up package which included a cash prize and ongoing advice from business experts.
Following the conclusion of the programme late last year, we learnt that:
- 87% of women felt that their business skills had improved
- 90% felt more confident about developing key business tools, such as a business plan, marketing strategy or cash flow statement
- 72% felt that the project helped them access new business networks.

Continuing our partnership with Dhriiti, and with thanks to the generous support of the Swarovski Foundation and the Hemraj Goyal Foundation, we are developing new initiative in India called Ekta (“Ekta” means “togetherness” or “cooperation” in Hindi). Over the course of one year we’ll empower 75 small-scale women producers in remote villages of Maharashtra through tailored skills training, mentoring, and business development support. We look forward bringing you more on Ekta in the coming months.
